Ontario Pork Revokes MBM Ban

A year ago, the Ontario Pork Council in Canada passed Regulation 5-2003 that banned the feeding of meat and bone meal to hogs in Ontario. The regulation went into effect March 1, 2004 (see “International Report,” April 2004 Render).

After reviewing a study by the George Morris Centre and Sparks Companies on the impact of removing meat and bone meal from hog rations, and a consultative process with industry stakeholders that took place in April, the council has decided to revoke the regulation effective August 1, 2004. According to the council, both the study and the consultations showed that there is an increased cost to producers if meat and bone meal is removed from hog rations.
