From the Editor

She was there in the beginning – an integral support person in the publishing of Render magazine some 31 years ago. And she remained a brick amidst the mortar until her passing on October 28, 2002.

Hazel Burnham served as Render’s editorial assistant for 20 years, scouraging through the hundreds of thousands of words that eventually graced the pages of the industry’s magazine, ensuring that words were spelled correctly, punctuation was intact, and the information flowed just right. And not once did she receive a salary for her efforts – it was a labor of love. Love for her husband and his love for the industry.

Hazel is the wife of Frank Burnham, Render’s editor and publisher from its inception in 1972 until his retirement in 1996. She unselfishly worked alongside the man she spent her life with for 45 years until he no longer could. She then wore a different hat as caregiver and nurse until she no longer could.

Sometimes, those individuals who work in the shadows of others don’t receive the recognition they deserve. But people like Hazel are key to the success of companies and their leaders, and Render was better for her involvement.

An outgoing spirit – she would strike up a conversation with anyone just about anywhere – Hazel loved her family unconditionally and always celebrated life, drinking in every moment, including her involvement with the industry. Up until her death, she continued to enjoy reading Render, always offering a compliment even if it wasn’t deserved.

Her husband will miss her dearly, as will her daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other family members, and friends. One individual is especially heartbroken over her death, but grateful for the guidance, inspiration, and love this strong, independent woman provided.

I’ll miss you, Grandma.

In memoriam – Hazel Marie Burnham
