Beijing Issues One Dog Per Family Rule


Beijing has issued a one dog per family rule as part of efforts to stamp out rabies. The restriction follows a campaign in August in which thousands of dogs were killed in order to fight the disease. The official Xinhua News Agency reported 318 people died nationwide in September due to rabies. Rabies is on the rise in China, with 2,651 reported deaths from the disease in 2004, the last year data is available. Reports are that only three percent of China’s dogs are vaccinated against rabies.
