China’s supply of dog foods has been largely from imports of internationally known brands, but the market share of domestically produced dog foods is expected to increase rapidly in the coming years, particularly in light of the difficult import regulations recently imposed by the Chinese government. However, this opportunity for local dog food producers is limited by the availability of imported animal protein meals. Since dog foods typically require a significant inclusion of animal products, and China’s rendering industry is extremely small, the growing dog food industry represents a new and significant export opportunity for U.S. rendered products.
Because of this opportunity, the National Renderers Association intends to hold a dog food formulation and production seminar in early 2007 for Chinese pet food nutritionists.
