The Animal Protein Producers Industry (APPI) has developed and approved a voluntary Code of Practice to promote the safety of animal proteins and rendered fats for feed use through the establishment of process controls and accreditation to verify the controls are in place. The document is available on the APPI Web site at www.animalprotein.org.
Renderers, fat recyclers, and protein blenders can enhance feed safety and receive recognition for this in the marketplace by implementing controls to prevent, eliminate, or reduce product safety hazards. Independent accreditation will be avail-able to verify that facilities have implemented the recommended process controls.
A plant’s process control plan is similar to a hazard analysis and critical control point plan in that it identifies possible hazards, determines whether physical, biological, and chemical hazards exist, and establishes ways to monitor and control them within appropriate standards. Accurate records, product traceability, and documentation are also required. APPI will also support the adoption and use of the Code of Practice through continuing education and training certification programs.
The APPI Code of Practice was developed with full awareness of the American Feed Industry Association’s (AFIA’s) Safe Feed/Safe Food program. Feed companies participating in the AFIA program will outline requirements for their suppliers, and the APPI Code of Practice will lead participants through a set of process controls that will satisfy those requirements. APPI is seeking an agreement with AFIA so that one accreditation by an APPI member will fulfill requirements for both programs.
