As deadline was approaching to get Render to print and in the hands of our readers, I found it difficult to think of anything else but the tragic events that hit the United States on September 11, 2001. My thoughts were with the victims, the rescuers, and the families who have suffered a loss so great none of us can imagine the pain they must be enduring.

Being on the West Coast, I did not learn of the situation until nearly an hour after events transpired. My 13-year-old son and I sat in awe as the tragedy unfolded before our eyes. I tried to remain strong for my son's sake, but as the majestic Twin Towers of the World Trade Center crumbled to the ground below, I felt such a great sense of loss that my tears could no longer be held back.

Not only did I weep for the thousands of people who did not survive these evil acts thrust upon our nation, but also for what the future might hold. My 19-year-old son, away at college, called that evening with a mix of emotions in his voice. He vowed that if his country needed him to serve in our nation's military, he would be the first in line.

What does the future hold for our children? Is there a new war to be fought? A new enemy? For so long we have tried to instill peace in our world, our nation, and our children, but harsh lessons such as the events of September 11 only remind us that evil people still exist and that our safety, our nation's safety, is vulnerable.

It was gratifying to see emerge from the rubble a reminder that the United States is a strong country, a country of unity, and a country that will not tolerate terrorist acts against our people.

Our prayers go out to those innocent victims and their families whose lives have been changed forever. We also pray for the healing of our country and the cities that have been devastated by the acts of monsters who have so little regard for human life.

God Bless America!
