Near Perfect Compliance with Feed Rule

October 4, 2007 - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released its recent enforcement activities on the ruminant feed ban put in place in August 1997 to prevent the establishment and amplification of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) through feed in the United States. Figures show a near perfect compliance rate among industry.

Of the 155 renderers inspected who handle material prohibited from use in ruminant feed, none were classified as “official action indicated (OAI),” and six (3.9 percent) were classified as “voluntary action indicated (VAI).”

Among the 466 FDA-licensed feed mills who handle prohibited materials, none were classified as OAI, and eight (1.7 percent) were classified as VAI. FDA inspected 2,481 feed mills not licensed to produce medicated feeds who handle prohibited materials. None were classified as OAI and 46 (1.9 percent) were classified as VAI.

Of the 191 protein blenders handling prohibited material, none was classified as OAI and five (2.6 percent) were classified as VAI.
